dreaming & staying awake: a poem

I know you don’t I?

There’s something about your face

That I recognize yet

Something feels out of place.

Rather, everything is just the way it’s supposed to be

And I’m not nervous or anxious or any different than I mean to be.

I can fly and move with just the power of thought

Then I’m challenged by all the things I’ve fought.

The bastards that infuriate,

The a-holes I hate,

The monsters that terrify, and

The family that makes me cry.

Then I wake–

In the middle of darkness

I take–

A moment to hold my mind

From fear or rage–

I fell out of freedom

Into the cage—

So I wait–

For the pain to subside

I wait–

For me to crawl back inside

My skin–

Hoping to find the freedom and safety that’s within.
