Trade School LA is a volunteer-run community organization that offers classes to the public using barter instead of money. Our goal is to offer an accessible educational resource that also builds trust & community connection in Los Angeles.
Trade School is a place to learn with other people who value practical wisdom, mutual aid, and the social nature of exchange. We believe that everyone has something to offer.
Anyone is welcome to teach a class. Whether you already have a class idea you want to bring to life, or you’d just like to learn more about how our process works, join us for orientation. You’ll get a brief history of how TSLA started and why we exist here in LA.
We’ll cover tips for teachers and show you how to get a class scheduled and on our website.
We’ll close by discussing your insights and ideas on teaching, sharing class ideas (if you have one already – optional), and hearing questions. This will be about sharing information, having fun and creating connection & camaraderie among our teaching community. Teachers only need to attend orientation once in order to teach in any future semesters.

Here is how Trade School works:
Step 1) Classes at Trade School LA are taught in exchange for barter items provided by students. For example, if you teach a class about building a website, you might ask students to bring 1 of the following barter items: a pack guitar strings; a paperback novel; a bag of local fruit; help with finding an apartment. Every class’s barter will be different, as each instructor sets their own class’s exchange.
Step 2) Students sign up for classes on our website, and, by signing up, they agree to bring 1 of the barter items requested by the instructor.
Step 3) On the day of class, the teachers & students meet in a space that is made available by Trade School LA. Students give their barter item to the teacher, and the class begins!
About the teacher, Kathie Adams
I really enjoy DIY and have had many years experience of organizing a monthly craft club, where we make new things that interest us. Making jam, books, stamps, paper, soap and felted soap have been annual favorites. I currently work as a psychotherapist and have retired from a career in engineering.
