Mental health advocacy in the workplace

The idea that every person can recover is core to all we do, and at PB we believe—no matter how people present in the current moment, no matter how hurt and disturbed people appear—everyone is capable of recovery.

We all should be offered hope and the possibility for change. Further, while we understand the need for safety when people are at their lowest points, we believe the behavioral health system should be mainly based in the community.

Even if folks need to be involuntarily hospitalized, they should always be moved towards the least restrictive environment possible with the goal of community treatment. These community resources should receive the vast majority of the funding be the place most people receive their behavioral health supports.

At PB, we believe in a recovery-based model utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach for behavioral health needs. There is no singular discipline that meets every behavioral health need. No one professional or single type of support solves every need. Rather, behavioral health needs are complex and unique to each person.

People often require several different modalities and approaches to moving forward in their recovery journey.

PB also believes that Peer Support Specialists serve vital roles in the mental health system. Peer Support Specialists have unique vantage points on the behavioral health system and can offer support in ways no other professionals can. While this is also true of social workers, occupational therapists, and other licensed mental health workers, it is Peer Support Specialists who can connect with those they serve using their lived experience as the catalyst to spark hope. They, along with other members of the multidisciplinary team, are at their most effective when they are honest, open, and proud about the reality of recovery from behavioral health challenges. This is why PB builds treatment teams capable of taking on these multidisciplinary approaches to behavioral health using a recovery model which keeps the concept of recovery central to all we do.
