In an exciting recent development, Painted Brain (PB), a pioneering organization in mental health advocacy and services, made a significant impact at the 2024 Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery Taking Action for Wellness Conference in Philadelphia, PA. The event, which coincided with the Center’s 20th anniversary, brought together leaders, advocates, and experts committed to advancing holistic well-being through mental health advocacy.

As a long-time leader in peer-driven mental health initiatives, Painted Brain facilitated a breakout session titled “PADS 101: Introduction to Psychiatric Advance Directives,” aimed at educating attendees about the importance and implementation of Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs). This session delved into the background, benefits, and ongoing efforts to advocate for the widespread adoption of PADs, with a specific focus on California’s current strategies.

Empowering Individuals with PADs

A Psychiatric Advance Directive (PAD) is a legal document that allows individuals with mental health conditions to outline their preferences for care and treatment during times of crisis, when they may not be able to advocate for themselves. By completing a PAD, individuals can ensure their voice is heard during difficult times, while also reducing the need for involuntary interventions like hospitalization.

Some of the key benefits of PADs include:

  • Preserved Autonomy: PADs enable individuals to have their preferences respected, ensuring their treatment aligns with personal values.
  • Enhanced Communication: PADs foster better collaboration between individuals, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Reduced Stress: Predefined preferences can reduce the anxiety often associated with crisis situations.
  • More Effective Treatment: With clear guidelines, healthcare providers can offer more effective, individualized care.
  • Fewer Involuntary Interventions: PADs can help reduce the need for involuntary treatments, such as hospitalization or restraints.
  • Support for Loved Ones: Families gain peace of mind, knowing they are helping their loved ones adhere to their wishes.

Championing PAD Implementation in California

As a recipient of the PADs Peer Voice-Advocacy and Education Grant, Painted Brain is leading the way in promoting PADs across California. This initiative, part of the MHSA Multi-County PADs Innovation Project, is focused on determining the feasibility of PAD implementation in different counties across the state. Each county has dedicated efforts toward particular populations, including foster youth, older adults, and those experiencing homelessness, based on the input from stakeholders.
